Laura
Laura signed up to be a ZOOP member just over
a month ago and after looking at the timetable
registered her interest in joining in with
Resilient’s activities. When we first met Laura,
she mentioned that it usually takes her some time to
pluck up the courage to begin a new project or activity
however she came to her first Creative Workshop session
with Resilient the very next day after registering with us.
Over the past few weeks, we have learned that
Laura is passionate about music, leading her to work
closely with our team member, Harry, to develop her
composing skills, create lyrics, and record vocals.
Laura has also started writing poetry.
Laura has been progressively building confidence each week and is enjoying learning new skills and engaging with other members of the group.
We asked Laura for feedback on her experience with us so far, and this is what she said:
Laura’s words
“I had gotten an email about this group and I saw they were taking people who are autistic and people like me who are on the waiting list. I usually overthink things but I decided to that I would go and give this group a try. I was mainly interested in the music stuff they had. When I arrived I was made to feel very welcome and comfortable. Harry and Louise both helped with putting my anxiety at ease and once I was settled in I started working on my own song.
I’ve been coming to the group for like 4 or 5 weeks and it’s something I look forward to. The group has really motivated me to create and stay consistent with my art. I’ve also made some really good friends and people who are like me and pursuing music. I was so comfortable I sang into the mic Harry had set up, that was a big step for me and I’m so grateful for the encouragement and the group has shown me.
The low pressure environment along with the encouragement is something other people on the autistic spectrum would find appealing. There are a variety of activities to do, I just focus on music but there is cooking, arts and crafts which look fun to do. I do want to give them a go I just find it hard to pull myself away from the music!
I would recommend this group to anyone on the spectrum who is looking for a place to be social in a safe calm environment and who wish to learn some new skills”

Mason
Working closely with Sam, his mentoring coach from
Career Connect Wirral we first met Mason in
September 2024 when he joined our Resilient project,
an eight-week programme helping to build emotional,
financial resilience and life skills.
As we got to know more about Mason over the weeks,
we found out that he had not been in school for
three years due to his overwhelming anxiety and had
left with no qualifications.
He also rarely went out and had few social connections.
At first Mason was very shy and was reluctant to speak
in our group setting however gradually he became
less nervous and worried and interacted more with
iResilient staff and volunteers and other participants.
It was when we were delivering our cooking session,
we found out that Mason loved to cook at home for
his family. He totally embraced this session with us from sourcing a recipe for chicken and pasta bake, buying the ingredients, and then cooking the dish back at our centre. This inspired the Resilient team to run separate cooking sessions for six weeks, where Mason helped design course content and even made pizza dough from scratch to share with the other participants so we could all enjoy freshly made pizza with a wide range of toppings.
Mason’s confidence improved week after week and he decided to join our Creative Digital skills project where he learnt how to make electronic dance music, work with Canva to design a record label and designed a local community project.
It was at this point that Mason decided he would like to return to education and so he applied to Wirral Met College to join their Hospitality and Arts course. After a practice interview with two of the Resilient staff, Mason went to his interview that afternoon and was thrilled to secure himself a place.
Mason is still accessing our services until he starts college in September, and it has been wonderful to see him becoming more confident and resilient over the last eight months. We asked him to sum up his journey so far with our organisation and this is what he said “I feel like I’ve started my life again thanks to everyone at Resilient.”
